Maintaining Large RMS files over 1 million blocks

If I remember OpenVMS correctly each user is allocated a certain amount of
space for temp files. Or it maybe that all users are using the same temp
file space. Try setting the account's temp/sort file dir to one that has
lots of free space and wont be competing with others at the same time. I
believe you set this in your logon command (DCL) file and it requires
defining/modifying a logical.

Subject: Maintaining Large RMS files over 1 million blocks

Hi Folks

When I run the

$convert file.dat file.dat

it takes several hours. The file is 1.5 million
blocks.

IS there a more efficient way to optimize the file?

Is moving to Oracle 7 on OpenVMS Alpha good option?
Thanks
