Powerhouse + Oracle-9i + AIX - Response issues

Oracle has several indexing types. Perhaps adjusting that could help
some of your performance issues.

We have a table with 1.7 million records that has a column that can
contain 1 of 16 possible values. We indexed this one way and the
performance sucked. Our DBA tried another indexing type and it worked
wonders.

Sorry, I don't remember the details. But that is why you have an
experienced Oracle DBA handy. Riiight?

In one of your e-mails you mentioned upgrading PH to the latest patch
level. Have you done that and had any better success?
