assert error running quick

Has anybody run across this error? I know Harry has, on the same project 2 years ago, and he thought it had something to do with conversion of nulls, but can't remember how to get around it.

problem happens with both 8.30 and 8.40d  on OpenVMS RDB 7.1

    Default Date Is Null:Yes

    Records & Sizes:    ITS_CONTACTS                     628 bytes ...

IF I change the Type back to RDB, I get negative parameter length for the first varchar that is NULL.
