or use the approach below, this enables return through to an alternate index
( and I always found the truncate necessary ) and this works whether you use
the cursor or standard file approach, and should not require a full table
scan,
procedure input client_name
begin
if 0.5 lt size(truncate(fieldtext))
then &
let fieldtext = &
upshift(fieldtext[1:1]) + truncate(fieldtext [2:50])
end
