More begging to differ :)

You don't need to strip out control characters, the solution is to create
the reports out to disc files and then use the print command from the DOS
shell. This bypasses windows attempt to remove control characters.

We have just recently done a conversion from OpenVMS to Windows. We
converted from an Interbase database to Oracle at the same time.

The most difficult and time consuming part of the job is not the differences
in powerhouse code between versions 7.x and 8.41D but rather the fact that
job scripts which are executed by the operating system have to be rewritten
to work in the windows environment (DOS jobs using the 'at' command to
launch them) - we don't run any qtp or quiz jobs interactively.

We also had a lot of PCL (Printer Command Language) embedded in our quiz
reports. All this had to be stripped out because windows printers don't
recognize PCL when executed from the windows environment. To handle this
problem, we used a Word Macro that will search for code in the text report
produced by quiz and handle the required changes to the report format
(example - bold for titles, underlines for financial reports, printing
landscape reports, etc).

All in all, it's not that difficult once you figure out how you're going to
accomplish the things like running the jobs and format reports (ie: how to
use the windows scheduler and "at" command to run your jobs and the use of a
Word Macro to handle the report formatting).

Hi,

We have a application running on OpenVms with RMS files and some COBOL
programs also. We have a customer that would like to have this application
running on a Windows server. We never worked with Powerhouse on Windows so
we do not know where the difficulties will be...

Anyone ported a complete system from VMS to Windows? If yes, where were the
difficulties...

Thanks!

Powerhouse 8.40
OpenVMS 7.3
