There is a reason, and it's not simply that it's always been this way.
Actually, this is by design because of the flexibility of UNIX. On UNIX,
you can specify almost anything in the file name, including periods
followed by characters. There's no way for us to know whether you meant
a dot followed by some characters as your extension or as part of the
file name. For that reason, we decided to add the extension to what was
specified. In the case of QUIZ output, it's .txt. You get the same thing
in QDESIGN if you say SCREEN x.abc where the resulting compiled screen
is x.abc.qkc.

this is true of VMS and Windows, so why not enable Unix to work the same
way
? if a user defined variable includes a file extention why does Cognos
add
to it on Unix - but not on VMS or windows ?
