and if you have oracle ( unlikely with mpe platforms ) you can use the
replace function. But over than that, and as always, mpe tends to do it best
:-)

with the substitute function, not only do you have to set up a dictionary
with the substitution char required ( assuming it is'nt the default of ^),
you also have to know how many replacement chars to expect in the target
string - which presumably varies with each input record; the latter means
the define has to have multiple if conditions, and therefore a presearch to
count the number of substitution chars ... etc...
