Powerhouse and my personallity disorder.

Thought I'd heard this, but had to verify...
An Wang developed and patented toroidal ferrite core memory while at
Harvard. It's local lore in the Boston area. We read all about it over
and over and over in the local papers, and we heard about over and over
and over on the local television news channels, during Wang Labs' death
spiral.
IBM bought the patent: http://www.xnumber.com/xnumber/anwang.htm

Wow. Compared to that, the machine I learned on (an IBM 360 Model 25
running DOS (not MS)) was like a supercomputer. The closest thing I come
to is one place I was at had some old IBM punched card equipment. An 83
Sorter and a 407 Accounting Machine (and don't ask why I still remember
the numbers). There was one fellow who knew how to wire them.

Whoah! Another fellow from the punch-card era! Never actually used
them in production, but my first job entailed migrating code (COBOL)
from a Burroughs card/tape-based machine (390 K of core memory!) to an
HP Series 44.
We were on a cruise in Feb and I had an interesting experience. I met a
fellow who had worked for IBM and had started work on ENIAC!!!!!
Unfortunately, I was too dumb-struck to get his name, but he had worked
developing the radar interface for the SAGE air-defense system of the
50s. He was also part of a team that was researching the usage of
mercury delay lines for main memory, which came to a halt when (I think
IBM) developed the iron core memory system! There's some old stuff ...
the guy was probably about FOUR times as smart as me, too!
Guy.

Hey, I figure I can still code a mean COBOL program. By the way, it
should be spelled in uppercase since it's an acronym for COmmon Business
Oriented Language. And I'm not THAT old. Mind you, I never learned how
to touch type or keyboard as it's called now. My son puts me to shame.
On the other hand, I made fewer mistakes with those punched cards :-)

ARGGGGG COBOL. Haven't used that since my first year of professional
programming....back in 1986.
As for your typing teacher...mine looked like an old battle-axe. Hence I
took auto mechanics instead. Maybe if yours was at my school I would
have taken it...definately would have learned to type without looking at
the keys...watching her instead.
I thought all the Cobol programmers died of with the Dinosaurs....lol
