Yes, QUICK allows you to open the file exclusively. However, this might
be a problem in a multi-user environment.

I'm certainly no Vax expert so I'll ask what may be a stupid question.
Is there an open option available to Quick that would force it to open
the file in the same manner as Quiz? That is, open it with exclusive
write access as in the case of this app, nothing else wants to read the
file while it is being created. Then perhaps Quick could approach the
times that Wilbert Vissers reported.
Could it be as simple as "file whatever designer open append exclusive"
?

This is consistent with my understanding of what happens. For direct
files, we post the end-of-file marker on each write. That's because if
we don't and the file is shared, the record just written may not be
available to other users. This would be the case if the records are
blocked. Normally, the block isn't posted until full or the file is
closed. This causes additional output to the file. In QUIZ, the file is
opened for output only and there is no need to do this posting, or any
locks around the output.
