Why do some people use apostrophies in variable names?

In the early days of Image (before PowerHouse) it was customary in some
circles to use apostrophies in file names and dashes in item names. You
were then able to quickly distinguish between file names and field names in
code. It may not have been a problem with mistaking the apostrophies for
string literals as I believe it was more common on the HP/3000 to use
double quotes (") to delimit strings.
