Cognos support letter for AS/400 - iSeriesActually, there is an even simpler
solution. I'm assuming that Powerhouse works with AIX and DB2. If that's
true, it might well be able to work on the iSeries in the PASE environment
very little additional work. We ported our MPE/iX migration toolkit to the
iSeries using PASE and DB2 with surprisingly little effort in less than two
months.
The most important issues with support of Powerhouse on the iSeries I
believe are the use of the traditional ILE Library/file file system, EBCDIC
support and the 5250 displays. Those need not be factors with PASE. One
can use vt220 type terminal screens through X-Windows, ASCII files and DB2
as the database. Flat files can be UNIX-like files, for ISAM we use
BYTEDESIGNS DISAM. Therefore, if COGNOS wants to support Powerhouse on the
iSeries, we're talking an investment of probably less than 8 man weeks to
make the required changes and test them.

John,
Oh, that would be a good option. Same hardware, different OS.
Bob Deskin: Any chance of PH for Linux?
Thanks.

Maybe they could add Linux when they drop the AS400?

That's very interesting.
I can't find any statements on their website regarding EOL of Powerhouse
on the OS400.

Subject: Cognos support letter for AS/400 - iSeries
I just received Cognos’ letter detailing their phasing out of support for
the AS/400 - iSeries. Of course, they haven’t been creating new versions of
PowerHouse for years, but at least they’ve been ensuring that PH would
continue to work on new versions of OS/400.
Quick questions for those of you in this list who are still running PH on
an AS/400:
1. Does this announcement make any difference to your on-going strategy
and/or future plans for providing hardware/software solutions for your
business?
2. What do you see as your “exit strategy” from the PH-AS/400 combination:
a. Run PH on an AS/400 as long as it works (applying new versions of
OS/400 unless it causes problems that can’t be worked around);
b. Replace our custom-written solution with a standard package;
c. Migrate our PH code to a different platform;
d. Convert our PH code to a different language (and, possibly,
platform);
e. Or?
Thanks.
