  I like Bill's idea. I used to use a cursor on the inventory table which 
had the
  phrase "SELECT FOR UPDATE OF <col>, <col>". This would place a lock on the 
row the required
  quantity would be deducted  and the row updated and the transaction 
commited.
  If the customer said he didn't want the item after all. The cursor would 
again be called
  and the quantity put back.
