I missed the original post for this thread, but it sounds like increasing
the "Expression Size" parameter in the QKGO file might solve this. This
parameter governs the maximum size of the result of an expression.

I don't know of a logical, or runtime parameter that would do this for you.
If you do the VAX equivalent of a UNIX 'strings' function on the
QUICK image you may see a variable of interest.
I don't have a copy of 710 to try it on.
If there is large amount of computation say in an internal procedure
it may be possible to move that computation and item declarations for the
computation to a 'ghost' subscreen.
