John,

with the greatest respect, the Mpe platform is probably, no - without doubt,
the most versatile OS system that I have ever seen with respect to PH
applications, and I am truly astonished that the versatility present will be
lost in 2006.

The only platform that comes close is VMS ( e.g. lexical functions );
admittedly Unix is great also, but Unix system functions tend to be pipe
connected and independent processes which are then patched together; whereas
Mpe calls appear to be continuous single line commands which merge into
extraordinarily flexible pseudo processes. To achieve this level of
functionality on VMS you would at least need a multi line DCL script.

I am truly astonished that there is no software provider that will make the
Mpe environment available as an OS layer on Unix or VMS.

P.S. I have not coded on the Mpe layer as a programmer, but have taken many
calls whilst at Cognos where the elegance of Mpe shines through. The
commands you guys are discussing are simply not available on non Mpe
platforms which is why I am bringing up the issue of exactly which platform
this user is actually using. If she is not using Mpe, I suspect that this
will all be lost on her :-)

Regards, Joe.

Joe

I don't think anybody requested a specific OS. We all just used examples
from our favourites. And that's probably OK in this case as most of them
have a command level function to do character substitution.

JWP

After all that, it occured to me that the caller had not specified that she
was coding on the MPE platform - I had assumed she was using VMS, did I miss
something ?
