NULL value in powerhouse

A signed integer size 4 field in an rdb table of mine has value as 
NULL when reported in sql. The same field shows 0 when reported 
thro' quiz. Why is this happening? Pls help. I wish to treat 
records with a NULL and those with a 0 in this field differently 
in my qdesign program.
