Powerhouse on Linux

In response to Neil Harvey's email about Linux, I have tried unsuccessfully for years to get Cognos to support Linux. I understand their position, it doesn't make economic sense, but like the theory of evolution, life has a way of adapting... I started my PH career on VAX, ported my apps to DOS so that common folk could use my apps, then when DOS was shelved, ported my apps to SCO UNIX. When Cognos announced that it was shelving the SCO version, I and my customers were really stuck, so I started tinkering with SCO compatibility on LINUX. Believe it or not it works - at least with the 7.33c6 version (can't get the libc6 files to work right for 8.23). From a licensing standpoint, I continued to purchase the SCO user licenses from Cognos, and SCO OS since there are a few SCO files you need, but after that you are basically running pure Linux. Had a little hiccup when the iBCS development path went to the abi method, but once I figured out which modules I needed things came up fine. I have successfully run PH on all types of LINUX, Slackware, Caldera, Corel, and Red Hat 5.0, 5.1, 5.2, 6.0, 6.1 and now 7.2. I am just using the C-ISAM file structures, but yes it would be great if they built a MySql interface. The largest installation I have is about 60 users. Databases are relatively small by today's standards 300-400mb but as to be expected from PH, I have never had data corruption or compatibility issue. My customers order their systems direct from Dell, IBM and Compaq with Red Hat installed and associated warranties. Of course Cognos doesn't warrant the system, but after 5+ years now of running on Linux, I am comfortable with its reliability.
