Qdesign - Sorting Question

Eric,
This is a cool technique!
I would think that you'd want to make the record length equal to the maximum
screen width (for our environment, it's 132 characters).
Do you ever break up the SORTFILE records into individual fields rather than
leaving them as one big field? It's more work, but I can see breaking them
up in order to handle editing like BWZ and FLOAT "$".
Thanks.
p.s. for Catherine: We use SET REPORT DEVICE VIEWER in one QUICK program
that calls a QUIZ program, but avoid using that technique because it takes
about 5 seconds to load QUIZ interactively.

Catherine-
We often use an auxiliary file set up specifically for the purpose of
displaying data in the sort order requested by the user.
We have a record called SORTFILE, it has a single element (unique ascending
key) called KY-SORTFILE of 100 characters.
In the quick screen, the SORTFILE is populated with whatever values we want
to manipulate how the data will be retrieved by quick.
We then do a while retrieving on the SORTFILE linking it to whatever
reference tables we want and the screen populates perfectly.
For instance, if the data is held as:
AAA 123
BBB 034
CCC 567
And the user wants to sort by numbers instead of letters, we will populate
KY-SORTFILE as:
123AAA
034BBB
567CCC
Doing a 'while ret' on SORTFILE will return the data sorted by the numbers.
You can then link the letters to whatever other file to return the
supporting reference information.
Was that clear enough? We use this method often, so it is second nature to
me and I may not be explaining it well enough. If you like, I could send
you some code snippets to explain further.
We are running Powerhouse 7.10.G on OpenVMS 7.1 on an Alpha.
Good luck!

Subject: Qdesign - Sorting Question
I am rather stagnant in my use of QDesign - I usually develop simple screens
with little more than redefines of data and data population based on user
responses. However, this time I have a user that wants a screen that is
really much like a report. This is just a find screen that lists who is on
suspension (usually less than a screen full) They would like this in alpha
order by last name and name is not a key field.
Any recommendations on how to show the data sorted the way they like
(usually I just tell them they need a quiz report instead of a screen)
without changing the structure of the database?
Thank you,
Catherine
