HP3000 Migration Statistics

Richard,

The PA-RISC hardware is being eclipsed. Problem is that is the chip set
that MPE runs on. So, there are only a handful of options:

1)	Port MPE to IA-64: Isn't going to happen by HP. Conceivably it could be
done by a group of 3rd party resources but it would be expensive, time
consuming, and there is a relatively small pool of companies to cover the
costs.

2)	Move on to another processor chip set by moving away from MPE. The old
"HP migrate" line which many companies will do, but many others would prefer
not to.

3)	Create an environment on another chip set, such as IA-64 (and others
going forward), that will emulate the PA-RISC instruction set to the point
that the MPE/iX operating system (and add-ons, utilities, and applications)
are completely unaware that it is not running on "natural PA-RISC" hardware.

This option #3 is real and is being investigate by at least two companies,
SRI and Allegro. SRI currently has a similar sort of emulator that runs
VMS.

Thanx,
	Jon

PA-RISC emulator? I thought that was a dying technology too.
To be replaced by Merced, I mean Itanium, someday.
