The MPE Call to Action !!!

Bob,

What this has to do with PowerHouse is that MPE/iX is still one of the main
platforms supported by COGNOS and this could potentially secure the future
of the MPE/iX operating system, at least for now. While I don't disagree
with your opinions about WindowsNT and Unix (including Linux), I also don't
happen to share them completely. That is not an attempt to invalidate
anything you've said below, it's just another view point. There are others
that also have my view point and some of them use PowerHouse. The original
email is an attempt to keep that group informed of their options.

Thanx,
	Jon

Excuse me, but what does this have to do with PowerHouse?

IF PowerHouse continues to be a viable development option in the future I
think that the only platforms that'll be around will be Windows NT and UNIX
(including LINUX).

I think OpenVMS is the best OS but the way things are going within a few
years we'll only have NT, UNIX and MVS as options. If OpenVMS and MPE go
the way of CPM, DG-OS, etc. so be it. As PowerHouse supporters we should be
detached from the platform and focus on the tool. That is, let's worry
about PowerHouse being around post 2006 first.

No matter how much we don't like it, us development people have virtually NO
say in what OS and DB will be implemented in a company, let alone the
development tools. Management will do what they want - usually under the
influence of vendors or "consultants" who are paid MUCH more than we.
Rather than fighting too many battles let's use our energies to fight the
most important one (at least as far as THIS list is concerned).

The HP-Compaq merger will put greater pressure on HP to consolidate on fewer
platforms. It won't be able to support HP-UX, True64 UNIX, OpenVMS, MPE,
non-Stop and Windows NT. My prediction is that it will end up with only two
OS options - Windows NT and a version of UNIX, especially as both companies
are moving to the Itanium as the CPU for high-end servers.

Viva la PowerHouse!

Importance: High

The time has come to step forward and be recognized. Is your
company
serious about wanting and/or needing to stay with MPE beyond the end of 2006
for whatever reason (need more time to migrate, don't plan on migrating,
whatever)? Are you a vendor, or consultant, that is serious about wanting
to continue supporting your MPE products and/or services beyond the end of
2006. Do you want there to be greater platform options (hardware and/or
emulated) beyond October 2003? Do you want "life after 2006" to include
maintenance and enhancements of the MPE environment?

Then say so !!! The OpenMPE Board of Directors has created a
"Letter of
Intent" for you to express this need. This is not another survey. It is a
hardcopy letter that you will need to read over, sign, and send back to us.
If you answered "yes" to any of the questions above, then you need to act.
These letters will be collected and delivered to HP at the e3000 Solution
Symposium in April. If you can't respond that fast, you still need to
respond. It is extremely important that we convey to HP the depth and
breath of the MPE community that has this particular need.

The "Letter of Intent" can be found on the OpenMPE web site @
www.OpenMPE.org .

Every shop and every vendor has a voice and it must be heard. Your
prompt
and serious attention to this matter is greatly appreciated.
