Upgrade questions (VMS - everyone else delete now)

Yes, you're way out of support from Compaq.
We're using VMS 7.3 (+ lots of ECOs), TCPIP 5.1 ECO 3, DECnetIV, and PH
7.10.G3.
I believe VMS 7.3-1 is imminent, and should be a relatively stable roll-up
of all the VMS 7.3 ECOs.

VMS: I'd recommend waiting for 7.3-1, and then perhaps monitoring
comp.os.vms for a few weeks, or asking advice there. If you want to install
7.3, probably the most critical gotcha is the new XFC caching - it simply
doesn't work, and must be turned off - keep using the old VCC caching.
The next choice, if you want to be super-cautious, is VMS 7.2-2 - the latest
version into "Prior Version Support".

UCX/TCPIP: UCX has been rewritten & renamed for V5. We're not power users,
but we do use it in a mixed pc/mac/sun/vms environment, and it seems OK.
Go with 5.1 ECO 3 or 4.

DECnet: we use DECnet IV (not OSI) - as far as I know the main use is the
horrible Cognos Flexlm licencing - I've no idea whether it can work with
DECnet OSI, but we don't use DECnet so much that we want to learn a
completely new variation.

PH - pretty well independent of the rest: 7.10G3/4 fixes some significant
bugs over 7.10.G1 - I'd recommend it. 8.30 is available, but I've been too
snowed under to try it. Bill Michael said it was a fairly big change a few
weeks back. You need 8.40 I believe for PH web, and I don't think 8.40 is
available yet.

So yes, you should plan an upgrade, ideally this year, to VMS 7.3-1 + TCPIP
5.1 - you'll get better support that way. That said, there's plenty of folk
still on VMS 6.2 or even 5.5 - presumably not expecting too much from
Support, but not expecting many new problems either.
