Found the answer to the weird logic problem

Could you check changing the temporary SIGNONUSER to another name as it is
in conflict with the reserved word? You could probably see this conflict if
you type in debugger 'd predefined signonuser'

My problem was that I should have been checking %signonuser.  The '%' acts
differently than plain old 'signonuser'.  'signonuser' all by itself goes
right back to the Unix logon user, whereas I just wanted to pick up an
environment variable.
