powerh-l digest, Vol 1 #243 - 6 msgs

I have a survey done by the research firm TechData that compares the TCO of
several servers, all of which run PowerHouse. This includes HP9000/HP-UX,
RS6000/AIX, AS400, Sun/Solaris, AlphaServer/OpenVMS. The research showed
that while it might not have the lowest startup cost the AlphaServer/OpenVMS
server beat the others for a 3 year total cost of ownership 'hands down'. I
can send you the survey results if you like.
Also, Compaq has announced that the AlphaServer will be replaced (or become)
the Itanium server and it has 'given' its Alpha technology and engineers to
Intel. Compaq is currently working on the port of OpenVMS to the Itanium
CPU and this should be completed by early next year with the Alpha CPU being
terminated in production at the end of 2003.
Given this I would recommend an OpenVMS solution with an Itanium server.
The advantage of this is that the Itanium CPU will support many OS's and a
wide range of software applications. This should give you an enterprise
platform that will be viable for many, many years to come, and at a
relatively lower cost than Sun, HP or IBM.
The biggest issue in the migration will be to decide on the database engine
you want to use. Oracle is very expensive but a good, DB2 is arguably
better at a slighter lower cost. But MS SQL Server is catching up fast and
at a MUCH lower cost, both in purchase price and in support. This RDBMS is
supported by Cognos and will run on an Itanium CPU (in the timeframe you
need). However, Oracle Rdb on a OpenVMS platform is the speed and volume
king as is evidenced by the number of large databases run by internet search
engines (NorthernLight, Lycos, etc.) This too is supported by Cognos.

Blue

Good morning , Shapitka
thank u for your reply.. Yes, the main reason WHY we need to migrate is
basically HPe3000 is no longer going to be supported and strategically, any
Business Operation cannot rely on it for too long and a 'longer term'
Infrastructure must be put in place. As we still have 3 years to make the
right migration move, it is better we make the migration and budget
accordingly in a plan and schedued manner, rather than 'waiting' for the
time-bomb to surface,, who knows when the HPe3000 is going to breakdown...
Throughout the years, we have many customised applications that is serving
our business very well until today, therefore, we will really like to keep
as many applications as possible during the 'porting process' beside the
database...
You mentioned that you had successfuly help your client migrate from our
current environment to HP-UX (I believe is HP9000, UNIX).. with very little
work.... May I know more:-
1) What is the Hardware and HP-UX os version?
2) Are you able to 'port' over the existing Database?
- If yes, via WHAT tools and to WHAT new database?
3) Are you able to 'port' over the existing PowerHouse Applications?
- If Yes, via WHAT tools and to WHAT Applications? (Powerhouse 4GL, WEB,
Axiant?)
- How much 'reworks' are needed on those 'ported' applications?
4) How much 'redevelopment ' of applications (not portable) are required?
5%, 10% etc?
5) What is your Migration Time-Frame, especially for database and
application 'porting'?
I hope you can provide some insights into the above questions.
Warmest regards.. and have a nice day.

Good Morning, or probably evening by now for you,
This is a wide open question. You can migrate to anything - given the
right
motivation.
We have moved a client from your environment to HP-UX (very little work),
and another client with the same environment to Axiant\Win 2K over MS SQL
Server 2000 (lots of work).
Why do you need to migrate (other than the HPe3000 eventually not being
supported), and what advantages\opportunities do you wish to realize from
the migration? Are your users satisfied with their interface, or do you
need a windows interface. Does your organization wish to stay with HP for
hardware? Does your organization have a direction set for data base
standardization? The variables are endless.
Let me know if you would like to discuss some of these options.
Our company is a Cognos PowerHouse Migration Service Partner, and we can
help you make some of these decisions.

Good Morning,
would like to seek some advice regarding migration from Migration from
Powerhouse vPH729C8? Currently, we are using HP3000 running Operating
System MPE/iX release 5.5, Turbo Image database.
Can u advise what are the Migration Options available in terms of Hardware,
OS, Database, and Exisiting Applications?
