Programmer Certification (Appearance of Knowledge)

I passed the certification exam for Impromptu 5.0 admin, just! I thought I
knew a lot about the product and had used it for years but the exam was MUCH
tougher than I anticipated.
The failure rate for passing medical exams is quite high so even a person
who graduated last in his class will know his/her stuff. It may be even
higher in some other disciplines such as Architecture, depending on the
school.
I personally was never able to use my Impromptu certification to get a job
(I think) but it certainly helped me learn quickly what I didn't know. A
humbling experience.
The best certification is one established by and supported by the user
community rather than a vendor. That way it can be seen as independent and
not designed to sell training courses.

I have little faith in these programs. It's not that I don't think they
are valuable to the individual. It gives them an advantage when selling
them selfs. I question its value to the hiring firm.
All it states is the individual was able to pass some basic examines.
What do you call a person who graduated last in his class from medical
school?
A doctor.
Also, it does not indicate the person has good coding practices, as this
conversation seems to be leaning towards.
Perhaps those of you with real experience for both sides of the
certification fence can speak up on this subject.
