Powerhouse 7.10/8.30 VMS upgrade (survey results - sort of)

It's not quite that straight forward. I believe Intel was having a hard
time getting it right developing a 64bit CPU. Compaq gave away all the
intellectual property for the Alpha plus virtually the whole Alpha
engineering team to Intel a year or so ago. So the Itanium that will
actually be released will have alpha technology in it and no explicit X86
code. For that matter no explicit VAX code probably either. Backwards
compatibility will be handled by emulation I think.
The last I heard the team that is porting OpenVMS to the Itanium is right on
schedule for a 2003 (late) release.

It can't be that much of a snap - they've been working
on it for over a year.
I can't see where the microcode of the Itanium (which is
supposed to have a migration path from x86) would be much
like the Alpha (which has a migration path from VAX).
