Powerhouse 7.10/8.30 VMS upgrade (survey results - sort of)

G'day Rick

I have to take objection to some of your remarks.

1. what do you mean by "run efficiently on hardware with a future"? I
believe the Itanium 64 bit processor will be the leading CPU for systems for
year to come.
2. At least two models of Oracle databases run on OpenVMS. Plus Oracle
applications also run on OpenVMS.
3. C/S technology is so 1970s! :)

Blue

Hello, Ingemar --

I've consulted for quite a few years in Powerhouse environments on both
VMS and Unix platforms. I think the majority of Powerhouse sites on
VMS these days are legacy, where there is no perceived major benefit to
doing an upgrade like that. These apps are either getting replaced by
packages, re-written in newer technology, or not being enhanced. This
may explain the low level of response.

The pattern I have seen in the states is that if a VMS Powerhouse app
is going to be enhanced or used in the medium-range, it is being
migrated to Unix so it can run efficiently on hardware with a future
and against a database such as Oracle. This also is a good first step
to stage it better for being re-written eventually in client-server
technology.

All the best...
