Adam,

Have you considered going to the HP e3000? The full Powerhouse 4GL
family is there and the native Image database system has both ODBC and JDBC
access. In fact, there is an ODBC driver bundled with the operating system,
as well as the Apache server and fully current and compliant Java.

Thanx,
    Jon

Thanks to all who have responded
We are reviewing the info we have received, and may ask more questions
later.

The reason we are looking at moving is we require ODBC and/or JDBC access to
the data for 2 way access for web pages.

Interbase 4 does not have ODBC access, whereas Interbase 6 or Sybase will
give this.
Apparently Interbase 6 will not work with Powerhouse (I think ver5.5 was
last supported - does it have ODBC?)
So Sybase is currently our best option (we already own it as well)

(Linux was just an option put forward by our network guy)

Again, Thanks for the info from you all. I have a lot of research to do.

  G'day Adam

  Question: WHY?

Response: there is a consultant in California who posted some messages on
the PowerHouse new group on the Cognos web site who said he had about 60
customers running PowerHouse 7.?? on Linux quite successfully. He used the
SCO version with virtually no modifications. He also said he was having
some problems with the 8.?? version on Linux but expected to work them out.

Cognos does NOT support this install and this consultant provides is own
support to his clients.

The only reason I can see why you would want to make such a move is that U
of Sydney must be hard up for money. 64 bit to 32 bit, alpha to Intel,
performance and reliability wise it doesn't make a lot of sense.

Why not go Windows NT and PowerHouse Web or Axiant 3.0?

  Good luck,
  Blue

We have Powerhouse ver 8.13d, with Interbase 4 as the database running
on Compaq Tru64 ver4.0f (on an Alpha box).

We are looking at moving to Interbase 6 or Sybase, updating our version
of PowerHouse and moving to another operating system.

We know that Interbase 6 or Sybase will run on Linux.

    My question is:
Is anyone running Powerhouse on Linux? (will it run there?)
Any comments on its performance etc.?
Which version and flavour of linux would be recommended? (we have RedHat
already.)

    Thanks
