Agree fully with the "unusable to most of us" comment about 8.10, also
known as the "bug release". 8.20 is up to D6, although the support web site
has never listed 8.20 downloads at all, and says the latest release is D3.
8.20D6 is _almost_ usable; there are workarounds for most (but not all...)
of the major bugs, and we actually have it in production. Of course, since
the head of PH development left the group earlier this year, it appears
that all work has stopped, or at least all communications.
To get back to 8.39 - based on our VMS experience, if it's at all possible
to stay on a 7.xx release, I would do so for as long as you can. Consider
any comments on future enhancments in 8.4x, or anything not already in your
hands, as 'nebulous goals', with no guarantees of when (if ever) you'll
have them. 8.30 (or at least it's feature set) is what, two years late? So
far? Too late for us at any rate, as we couldn't wait and had to go ahead
and rip out all the "VMS-isms" and move to 8.20 so we could use Oracle. We
don't plan on putting that code back in, so 8.30 is now a non-issue.

First I've heard of 8.49.
Should we expect 8.30 for OpenVMS before it, after it, with it, or never
Us VMSers don't seem to have had much development for our maintenance
payments lately: since 7.10G & G1 three years ago (Fall '98), there's been
just minor fixes in G2 & G3 in '99, and the (unusable to most of us) 8.10
release (whenever). And still no suggestion when 8.30 might ship.

In current plans for the PowerHouse 4GL 8.49 for MPE/iX release, it is
hoped that it will be possible to include the ability to use PHD data
dictionaries (together with the POW application for maintaining them) as
well as the current PDC data dictionaries... giving MPE/iX customers the
same choice that OpenVMS customers will have as they upgrade to PowerHouse
4GL 8.30. PHD with POWwill allow for all of the functional aspects of
Architect in terms of dictionary management, less the reporting side.
However, as indicated earlier, it is thought that PHD will be available
in PowerHouse 4GL 8.49 which will be released in the timeframe, December
2001 to February 2002.
