My reservations with this sort of thing is that the pattern function is not
the cheapest thing in the world. I use them when they're the easiest or
clearest way to code something. If they take my hours to write then they'll
probably take the next person as long to read them when something needs
changing.

Perhaps, in this era of Bill's bloated OS and Larry's bloated DBMS, using
the machine efficiently is just a quaint anachronism which reveals something
about my age.
