RE: PowerHouse and the future of the HP e3000I don't know about the HP3000
box and MPEix but sales of AlphaServers and OpenVMS have been going UP in
the last couple of years to the degree that they plus Tandem keep Compaq
from going under.
I don't think that HP will be able to buy Compaq anyway and I also don't
think the two companies are a good fit - too much overlap of product lines
and services.
Compaq has given the Alpha technology to Intel, including the whole
engineering team, to help make the Itanium (was Merced) CPU a real 21st
century processor. Compaq software folks are busy with the process of
porting OpenVMS, language compilers and other software to the Itanium as we
speak with the first versions due out late next year.
Given these facts I don't think OpenVMS will have an untimely death like
MPEix.
Regards to all,
Blue

Don't start celebrating yet Blue. If you read up on what Carly has been
doing at HP you will see that VMS will not last much longer.
Conrad, suggest that you have a browse of the HP3000-L archive and then
re-evaluate your expected tools/education requirement for users migrating
from MPE/iX to HP-UX. You might be surprised at how much you will have to
DOWNGRADE your expectations.
