'Y' in defined item name

Same here - I'm buggered if I can stop it. 
I've tried declaring it as zoned & num instead of date, different formats, separators, putting the formatting on the report output rather than in the define, etc, etc, etc...

It'd be interesting to know how long this little "feature" has been with us. 
We're PH 7.10.G1 - OpenVMS 7.2.
Anyone got an older version?
