Converting indexed subfiles from one format to another

We are an HP3000 site which is about to convert from Powerhouse version 7.29
to 8.19.  We have a number of permanent indexed subfiles which need to be
converted to format 8.  In the past we have used MPEX and a REPEAT...FOR
loop to use QTP and a programmatically-built QTP use file to rebuild the
subfile and rename the newly-created subfile back to the original.  This
works fine for non-indexed subfiles but I know of no way to programmatically
retrieve the index name so when I rebuild the subfile I have an index. 

Anyone out there devised a way to convert indexed subfiles from one format
to another?  Does Cognos have such a tool that I am not aware of?
