portable subfiles and vi

Hello Aci
Is the record length an even number of bytes? I have added a character 1 filler
to the dictionary definition of an imported data file with an odd number of
bytes (no change to the data itself) and it became readable in both Powerhouse
and vi, where previously it had been all on one line. I don't know why!
I have also produced portable subfiles in vi, using data given to me in an
email. I lined up the data to the format of the subfile and pasted it into vi as
filename.ps after I had produced an empty subfile from the database items (using
impossible selection to select 0 records). To make this work, I had to add a
filler to the end of the line (1 readable character if the data part was odd
bytes or 2 characters if even bytes - not spaces). This makes the records still
readable in PH after saving in vi, or else vi makes the end of line after the
last non-blank character. You would have to keep the record length fixed if you
edit it in vi, if you want to use it in PH again.
This is different from what you want to do, but it might help.
If anyone knows why any of this works, please enlighten me! I did it all by
trial and error.
regards
