Dear All,
I have a query somewhat similar to Hamid Bourchih's and would
also much appreciate some explanation.

We run Powerhouse 7.10G1 on VAX/7.02 using RMS files.
In our student record system one file has a repeating alternate index with
several segments, the first two of which are
                                -- AcademicYear char*2
                                -- CourseCode char*6

I wish to retrieve the records for a specific set of course codes for the
three academic years 96, 97 & 98 (ie 1996/97, 1997/98, 1998/99).

Using Quiz I can CHOOSE in two ways :-
  a) choose AcademicYear parm, CourseCode parm upshift, or
  b) choose AcademicYear parm range, CourseCode parm upshift.

In case a) it needed <7 secs cputime & <1 min clocktime to retrieve
the 1158 records; but in case b) it needed > 5 & 1/2 mins cputime &
over 26 mins clocktime.

Why this enormous difference ? It is more than disconcerting, since
case b) would appear to be the "proper" method. My example is one
for which entry of each index value in the range is an acceptable task,
but this will not always (probably rarely) be the case in reality.

                         Thanks for any explanations
                            Terry
