The other possibility is that:
>choose product_item (case of product_choice        &
>               when "A" : "A@"                &
>               when "L" :  "B@@")

is significantly slower than 'choose product_item "B@@"' - might be worth
checking.

Other techniques might be a global temp as suggested, or conditional
compilation (works for Quiz too), to use the best code for the parameter.
