Sounds strange why they never would have backed up the system.  You say you got the dictionary and the compiled files off but the sources are unreadable.  Have you checked with the hardware company for any utilities that may be useful to salvage/correct information from your physical devices?  Have you posed this question to the HP3000 newgroup?  Have you checked all the closets there for any old boxes with 'Old source code' written on them?  If all else fails you have the screens and the dictionary that sounds like a pretty good set of specs to start from.  Bob's idea of using an editor might allow you to salvage a couple lines of code.
