Patterns

Speaking of using patterns in Select mode, what do you do when the pattern
you want to enter is longer than the field on the screen?  I've always found
it very irritating when trying to enter a complex pattern in a short field
and it keeps beeping at me because I'm trying to exceed the length of the
field.  Is there any way around this?
