Thanks for all the suggestions.

set stacksize - is available, but didn't seem to help.
subdividing the report to work around a bug or over-complexity - however
I hacked it around, it still broke (at run-time, not compile-time).

What I forgot to mention before was that it was compiled code which was
failing: it built OK, then crashed at runtime.

Time for a quick'n'dirty Pascal program, I think.
