Archie Bunker

"Whatever", was heavily used by good old Archie,
before it became popular in the ninties.

We used to think doctors had integrity and knew
everything.
We used to think lawyers were honest.
We used to think president's didn't have sex with
women they weren't married to.
We believed a 'professor' knew everything.
Whatever.

I keep hearing that song, Nowhere Man, by the beatles.
=====================
Anyway, the professor is a great idea. What do I care?
Brilliant, Stupendous, whatever.
Hire any damn body you want.
=====================
I think professors are well placed for young minds.
However, I collaborate with literally, hundreds of
phd's on a regular basis, and some teach. the degree
is not useful in applied thinking. Experience counts,
always has.
=====================
Our collaborators, pontificate. The real work and
thinking is done by those who have conditioned
themselves to it, our degrees are not involved in
that. Hell, pissing on my collegate diploma's was one
of life's great pleasures. Degrees don't mean anything
in my circle. Everybody has an advanced degree here.

However, I'm looking at a Powerhouse platform, too,
for some inside data work. I'm also being careful to
avoid the type of talent that believes they are so
smart, that they don't have to communicate with
anyone, beyond looking at them and asking, "is it done
yet?" Or, think that if they are smart, no one else
needs to know anything. We force true teamwork, here.
And the onus is on the leaders. After interviewing
many, many, many, many, many, many, many candidates,
we still haven't found a human being. No more techies.
They don't think, is our experience. We prefer human
beings that think at a master's level, on one subject,
programming, database, whatever, and give them new
tools. They move their expertise to a master's level.
We don't give a crap about experience with Java,
Oracle dba jive and ERwin-weeniness. Your integrity is
measured and if it fails, you go. They mean it. People
get terminated if they are adjudged as having poor
integrity, or selfish intentions.

I assert that systems built in Powerhouse require good
teams, in order to work well.

To the point of using Cognos, the Powerhouse platform
seems to proliferate incestuous little circles in each
business. If you aren't a 'team player' aka kiss-ass,
don't make waves and beg for spec's, then, get out.
Where I am, anyone showing a tendency to take over by
politics is immediately dismissed. This is not
tolerated. You either solve problems or leave. The
three layers of middle to middle-middle, then to
middle-middle-middle management, don't work here.

However, you can say anything you want, and no one
will destroy you, or send you away, unless you've
committed an unforgiveable act that can be prosecuted
under a law. Otherwise, you can whatever. I found two
places like that in the world. Everywhere else, crap.

So, what does all this have to do with a Powerhouse
shop?
