Cognos user conference and ADT

What do other people think?

(1) To people who lament the lack of Application Development Tools papers at
the conferences - how many people are prepared to front up with a paper? At
the last conference presenters got free registration. If you want to cut the
cost of attendance, and increase the number of PowerHouse papers one
solution is to submit a paper of your own (known in New Zealand, in the
kindest possible way, as the "put up or shut up" option) And yes, I know
some of you have, as I have, but I've run out of new ideas and interesting
things to say. This is in direct contrast to the BI streams where there's
lots of new product to come to grips with (I was going to say new ideas, but
a lot of them are old ideas being recycled... or should that be e-cycled?

(2) Why not try your local branch of the Cognos International User Group -
have a chapter volunteer to organise a techie session. But there's the rub -
"volunteer". Running a professional event is expensive and time consuming.
There's got to be a payback for the organisers, and at the moment the
payback for Cognos is in evangelising the BI world. This is the way it was
in the early days of PowerHouse (I do recall someone lamenting the lack of
papers on Multiview, Expert and what was that spreadsheet program -
Dollar$Flow? - other Cognos products that were not where the action was).

(3) The demise of PowerHouse conference papers is common to all mature
technologies - look at what happened to Decus, HPUG etc. It's like the
garden - first there's the seedlings struggling to get established, then
lots of excitement as the blooms come bursting through, but after a while it
all starts to wilt and eventually fades away. After 20 years there's not a
great deal left to say about PowerHouse that hasn't been said already. Sure,
war stories are fun over a beer, but sometimes it's just time to move on.

That's my tuppence-worth. Maybe see you at the conference?
Cheers
John W
