PowerHouse Web

In going through my mail and checking my lists of things to check (you see,
I do use what you send me from the list) I found the attached message
regarding using @ in a symbol or logical in the CHOOSE in 7.10G. Well, it
seems Allison fixed it because she tested it and it works in 7.10G5. And it
works in 8.30, which is coming along nicely. My list updates are coming
along. Hope to have it done this week (barring any other disasters).

I am on 7.10e6 on an DEC ALPHA running VMS. I discovered that going
from 7.10e6 to 7.10g would cost far too much to even consider making
the upgrade. Among the disheartening losses of functions was the
inability to pass a system symbol containing an "@" into a CHOOSE
statement. 7.10g would not handle this at all, yet 7.10e6 handles
this just fine.

When I called COGNOS about this, they told me that they knew about it,
but had no plans to fix the problem even though they had complaints
from a number of other users. I put in a bug fix request last year,
but have little hope that it will be fixed anytime soon. It took them
nearly 6 months just to call me back to confirm the request.

Until I hear more positive feedback on later releases, I plan to stay
right where I am, on 7.10e6. I may be falling behind by not moving
forward, but, as it is, I can still keep my applications running with
reasonable success. It sure beats the alternatives at this time....

Regardless of whether features were "taken out" or "never there" (a
totally
meaningless distinction), 8.20D on VMS is effectively unusable. (And
it's
far better than prior 8.20's, or 8.10.) In addition to the "missing"
features, there are several serious bugs in the VMS version, at least
one
of which has now been "promoted to a Critical site". That one caused
us to
delay our move to 8.20 indefinitely (originally scheduled for this
weekend). If you can possibly wait for 8.30, I'd recommend you do so -
or
at the very least, wait for 8.20"E", or whatever they call the bug-fix
version.

PowerHouse Web is only available with PowerHouse 8.20... and the VMS
stuff
wasn't taken out- it was never in that version. But don't give up on
it
getting there yet...

7.10G4 is the latest available VMS version. I believe PH Web requires
8.10
(the version with all the VMS stuff taken out), also available. VMS
has
moved
on a way as well ;)

Looked at possibilities, done nothing, saying nothing, yet.
But I'd be interested in seeing here what others are doing, who's
bought it / evaluated it, and for what purpose / size of project,
particularly in the UK.

And the warm weather has been & gone - 90 degrees in the office last
Monday.
But who cares - this is the land of warm beer, not warm weather.
