Powerhouse 8.20D

Hi Mike,
The 8.x products use PDC dictionary, compiled from PDL source. This is a
flat file whose structure is only accessible to the PowerHouse components,
unlike the indexed-file, RMS-based, PHD dictionary currently used by
PowerHouse on OpenVMS.
The project to add most of the OpenVMS-specifics from the 7.10G product into
the PowerHouse Series 8 codestream is well underway. This includes the
option to use a new PowerHouse Series 8 PHD or PDC dictionary. The result
will be PowerHouse 4GL 8.30, which will be a much easier prospect to move to
from an existing 7.x version of PowerHouse (or even earlier) on OpenVMS.
If you are looking at 8.20 to add some web functionality to your
applications then I'd suggest installing 8.20 alongside your existing 7.10.
You will then be able to use 8.20 (and a PDC dictionary derived from your
existing PHD dictionary) to build PowerHouse Web applications, but keep your
existing apps going under 7.10 until 8.30 becomes available, and then move
them forward.
Best regards,
Conrad

Subject: Powerhouse 8.20D
We are beginning to look at Powerhouse 8.20D on VMS. Of course there are
the VMSisms to worry about, but I'm curious about the dictionary structure.
We have a couple of applications that need to read the dictionary directly.
We were able to do that with version 7 and before, but of course the format
has changed.
Do any of you have some documentation of the internal structure of the new
dictionary structure? I could figure it out, but would hope that someone
can shed some light to make it easier.
Thanks for your help.
Mike
