Actually, the suggestion to use "$ run/detach
sys$system:loginout/input=myproc.com", where myproc.com is a command
procedure that defines logicals and runs QUICK, worked famously.  It allows
the command procedure to be run as a detached process without tying up a
batch queue.  My thanks, again, to those who suggested this.
