OVMS to Unix migration

Why such madness?

I work on PH software on both VMS and Unix. I must admit I know nothing
about emulators, but as far as I am aware, all your DCL stuff will have to
be completely rewritten, and the Unix equivalent is much less intuitive.

There will be very little trouble with Powerhouse. The main difference will
be that record 1 in VMS is record 0 in Unix, and if you call programs in other
directories, the logicals have a different format. Unix is also case-sensitive
for commands outside PH.

RMS should convert to C-ISAM easily enough, but remember C-ISAM has separate
.dat and .idx files (.dat, .idx and .sfd for indexed subfiles rather than
having the index within the data file, and there is no .fdl for converting
and reorganising files. You always have to unload and reload after a file
format change.

Relational database will probably require only a few standardised code
changes to run, but needs more care to give you the full benefits. It also
requires a lot of system management compared to indexed files.

I am obviously very biased, so I hope you will get other replies from the
other side to help you make a good decision.
