conversion ?

You are really dealing with two separate conversions wrapped into one
project.

1) Moving from the HP e3000 MPE\ix to SUN Solaris Unix

2) Moving your DB to a relational model.

There are so many issues that need to be addressed under each of these
projects. Under option 2, your Data Base may need to be redesigned. Under
option 1, you need to solve problems such as passing parms from one process
to another, job scheduling, changing job streams to scripts, and finding
suitable report distribution tools.

I worked with a team that successfully accomplished what you are trying. We
moved from HP3000 (MPE\ix) to HP9000 (HP-ux) and then moved to Oracle DB.
The environment was mostly PH, some Cobol, Image and some KSAM.

Because of the complexities involved we did the project in two phases.

In phase I, we used C-ISAM files from Micro-Focus to convert all our KSAM
and IMAGE data structures to run under Unix. All that was required for the
PH components was to delete the Automatic master from the dictionary and
change a few other lines. Our PH application then required very little
modification. Our Cobol programs were converted to Micro-Focus Cobol and
required modification for file opens, and file access. By getting rid of
the IMAGE FINTRINSICS, it made the Cobol programs a lot easier to read.
This allowed us to migrate the applications to the new platform and solve
all of operating specific problems. We moved nine applications of which 4
were major (1000+ programs each). With a team of 6 we made the move in
under 3 months. Our applications were only frozen from maintenance for
about 1 month.

Then in phase II the real work began on an application by application basis.
I can not comment too much on what was involved with this process, as I left
the team to work on some other projects. But I know that all the
applications were converted to use the Oracle DB.

Hope this helps gives you some more insight.

Subject: conversion ?

Good Day!!!!

I need to hear some feed back from you guys, who had done a migration from
(HP3000/957) IMAGE DATABASE - SQL DB or Oracle DB on SUN Solaris system.

We are planning to do a conversion of our system. I would like to findout
from
you guys, How hard it is? What is the best approach? Can we convert all our
COBOL programs(to use micro focus) and powerhouse(?)? How long would it
take us to do it? We have about 24g of records of our HP3000/957 system now.

Thanks,
