PDQ

Our reasons for using it were for performance. Unfortunately, we have
several QUICK screens that can run one of dozens of reports via "COMMAND RUN
"program name"". I suspect I can simply COMMAND RUN "QUIZ program" or some
such. I'm slightly worried about performance since a typical "report"
prints a single file label to go on a medical records jacket. We do a bunch
of those each day.

Subject: RE: PDQ
If memory serves, PDQ was a QUIZ compiler produced by a third-
party many years ago. I seem to remember trying it at my
previous employer in the UK before joining Cognos...and I
joined Cognos over 12 years ago!
My advice would be to go "pure" PowerHouse 8.19 and forget
about PDQ. Why? Well, for a start PDL is now the supported
data dictionary for PH8.19. As Michael points out, it is
very easy to convert to PDL -- although I would recommend
that you use the QDDTOPDL program supplied with PH8.19 to
convert your existing QDD source file into a PDL source
file, rather than using QSHOW to generate the PDL from an
existing compiled QSCHEMAC file. (The QDDTOPDL program
actually does a better job -- my personal opinion.)
Once you have your PDL source simply compile it, and then
compile your QUIZ programs against the new dictionary.
The only reason I can see for this being a problem is if
you used PDQ to compile the QUIZ programs so that they
could be run on an HP 3000 that didn't actually have QUIZ
(or QUIZR, the run-time QUIZ) installed. If this is the
case then perhaps you should call Bob Berry, on
1-800-426-4667 extension 2270, and ask about getting a
PowerHouse 4GL Run Time license for those other machines
(if you compile on one and simply want to run on the
others), or else a PowerHouse 4GL Reporting license (i.e.
QUIZ plus the data dictionary) if you prefer to have the
ability to compile or run from source on those other
machines.
The only other reason for using PDQ on an MPE/V machine
was performance -- and I don't think that will be a
problem on a recent MPE/iX machine.

Subject: PDQ
Well, my conversion from MPE/V to MPE/iX continues. Turns out our major
application made heavy use of PDQ. Can anyone tell me:
1. Status of PDQ (still marketed/supported? by whom?)
2. Can I use it with Powerhouse 8?? Have to do some gyrations to
create/keep a QDD dictionary?
3. Suggestions for approaches?
TIA.
