Richard, your last statement sounds like one of "cutting off my nose to
spite my face". There are some things that Quiz can do better than
Impromptu but in my experience these are complex reports that users will
never want or be allowed to do, the latter to prevent the system stalling
due to poor joins.
Impromptu is a great tool and equal to or better than just about any other
Windows based report writer you can buy. For only a few hundred USD per
seat it is cheap at that. Check out the price of Oracle Reports and compare
features.
When you combine the power of Impromptu with PowerPlay, Scenario, 4Thought
and DataMerchant, you get a VERY powerful set of end user reporting tools.
Add these to the new PowerHouse Web and you're "cooking with gas" (I don't
know if this saying is used outside of Oz). The ONLY whinge (whine) I have
about Cognos's BI tools is the lack of a data porting tool to move legacy
data into a warehouse or data mart. Oh, and it sure would be nice if the BI
tools could access the PowerHouse dictionaryor the PHD and catalog concepts
could be merged. Oh, and I would also like to see a GUI interface to the
PHD. Oh, and .... ;-)
