We have been using 710G1 for some months now, and without any
problems. Two weeks ago we upgraded to OpenVMS7.2 on our
production machine and so far have not heard of any problems that
can be attributed to the combination of operating system & Powerhouse
version.
On the production machine we have a run-time & reporting license.
The system -- mainly student records, some finance -- is used by
around 40 to50 persons generally, with a total of about 100 VAX
processes and subprocesses executing. We run a screen based
system that enables users to build & submit DCL jobs that run QTP
and Quiz programs precompiled by MIS staff on the development
machine (which runs Open VMS7.1) or precompiled by the supplier of
the bulk of the student record system. A few users have the facility
to write their own Quiz reports, and do a lot of reporting.
We have, however, found some problems in other areas, particularly
DECNet & TCP/IP.
Under OpenVMS7.2 users are recommended to install DECNet Phase V.
But we couldn't get it to work, so went back to Phase IV -- which, sadly,
is now a 'prior support' package only.
The upgrade to OpenVMS7.2 provides for TCP/IP v5.0, but unfortunately
features of it do not work as we need. We are not sure whether the
differences are features or bugs. The main problem has been that
TCPIP$PING.Exe always returns $Status to indicate that execution was
successful -- even when it clearly failed. Apparently this feature will
be modified in the release due out at the end of the year.
Prior to the upgrade to OpenVMS7.2 we had been using UCX v4.2, but
have been told by Compaq/Digital staff that under OpenVMS7.2 there is
the possibility of crashes.
We managed to get a "field test executable" version of TCP/IP v5.0, and
it works fine -- except that the values returned by $Status are NOT all
the same as in previous versions of (UCX) TCP/IP services.
Also, the command usage is distinctly Unix but the help info is most
decidedly Digital.
