Oracle RDBMS (was: What's the best way...)

I can confirm your statement Robert, that Oracle did intend to migrate
the Rdb folks, having been at a couple of sites with Rdb and tied to
one of the DEC Database Guru's at the time. He went to Oracle with
the move. The partitions provided independent table spaces with
automatic partition key constraints. The independent management of a
portion of a partitioned table was very appealing, not to mention the
parallel processing and speed increases (when configured properly).
I've witnessed several DBA's trying to apply 7.3 design 8.05
technology. This causes parallel processing to fail miserably. Also,
the parallel application processing has to align with the database
structure. Two major changes from 7.3 to 8.0 were simply the
partitions and Blobs.
DEC has an interesting history of having financial demi-gods with
spreadsheets and CEO's who were "decision-makers" step through a
series of layoffs, that should be likened to participants in the
Darwin Award. They cut off every appendage until they actually cut
off their head. The CEO did get fired and of course we all know
Compaq has saved this great little company.
The VP of Technology went to Microsoft. Hence, we saw COM turn into
DCOM, and the other mechanisms that internally make a computer, really
work, started to appear in Microsoft's operating system and add-ons.
Rdb went to Oracle. Who knows what will be this outcome? Oracle has
an an innate requirement that to work there you need to be half-pirana
and half-psychotic.
