PowerHouse Web (Was PowerSaurus)

I'll take this one. I'm the PowerHouse Web Product Manager. PowerHouse Web
will be released on OpenVMS VAX and Alpha. Also on NT, UNIX (HP-UX is first
but not last), and MPE/iX. The OpenVMS version should go to beta next week
and we're planning release for late May/early June (he said hopefully). I
gather you'll be using Digital UNIX. It's further down the list and probably
won't be out until the summer.

PowerHouse Web is very flexible and very distributed. For example, you can
have your Web Server on an NT machine connected to a Alpha box. You would
use the PHCGI program from the NT version of PowerHouse Web to connect to
the rest of the PowerHouse Web components on the Alpha box.

PowerHouse Web "code" is the same as PowerHouse "code". There are a few new
keywords like HTML, CHECKBOX, RADIOBUTTON, LINKSCREEN, and so on. Things we
need to make a web application work. While you could take an existing
application and "port" it to the web, you probably want to design the
application for the web. Because the web is stateless, applications are
different. You don't have the same prompt and response dialog as with
"green-screen" terminals. Nor do you have subscreens. You move from screen
to screen (or form to form) using a LINKSCREEN. The data that you pass must
exist on the passing form, rather than in the passing screen. And you can't
pass files in the same way.

The reason for some of the restrictions are based on the way the web works.

Conrad,

I am a little confused as to which platform release we fall into. We are
currently using Powerhouse on an Alpha OpenVMS platform. We are purchasing
another Alpha box with Unix that we will use for Web development using
Oracle.

1. Will we be able to convert our existing Powerhouse code to Powerhouse
Web? If so, what, if any additional software will we need (some sort of
translation software?) So, can we convert our existing Powerhouse programs
to Powerhouse Web on the OpenVMS platform and then migrate to the Unix
Oracle server?

2. What release of Powerhouse Web will we fall into. I hope its not the
last one, 'depending on customer demand'.
