Thanks for all of the input (pun intended) - I must have read the "10 steps" documentation 10 times and didn't pick up that FIELDTEXT was set in step 3. 


One person suggested moving the code from the INPUT procedure to the EDIT procedure. I tried that, but if the user does not enter a value, it skips to step 8, bypassing the EDIT and PROCESS procedures. I even tried "forcing" the EDIT procedure by changing FIELDTEXT, but that had problems too.


I think the solution as stated by others, is to test for the size of FIELDTEXT.
